It’s proven.
Fireworks cause harm…

Why do many of us want backyard fireworks banned?

  • Fireworks used as weapons against Police.
  • Animals: horses, pets and livestock suffer from terror, leading to injury or death every fireworks season. The 'season' seems to go all year long - its no longer just November 5th.
  • Native birds abandon their nests.
  • Fire risks and property damage put unnecessary strain on our emergency services and neighbourhood safety.
  • There are hundreds of fires, caused by fireworks every single year.
  • Fireworks cause extreme distress to those with PTSD or sensory issues. Noise disturbance causes sleep loss for many as fireworks go off at random times throughout the night

*LGNZ took a vote of Councils in 2019 and 63.6% of Councils around the motu, want fireworks banned (extract from the 2019 Select Committee hearing on this page. Click to watch)

The Petitions Committee voted unanimously to recommend the government ban fireworks or at the very least, have a Special Debate. Five Members of Parliament from National (2), Labour, the Greens and NZ First.

This was declined by Luxon and Seymour in a secret Caucus meeting. Is this democratic? Members of Parliament work on committees. They are there to learn from the evidence. These 5 MP's listened. They learnt. They applied their critical thinking skills to all the evidence presented. The Report was excellent and well considered.

How else does the public affect change in legislation? But to go through this vigorous process? Does the current Prime Minister not respect his colleagues?

Alice founded Ban the Boom NZ in 2018 after losing her own much loved horse, Lucas to injury when he was spooked from a nearby pyrotechnic display, impaled himself on a fence and wasn't able to be saved. Click here to read Alice's story.

We are all volunteers dedicated and determined to stopping the harm from fireworks.

Our Story

Ban the Boom NZ was born out of a shared frustration with the continual impact of fireworks harm on New Zealand neighbourhoods. We are united by the belief that safety and peace should come first over the 'right' to let off explosives at random. The collateral damage is far too great for a few minutes of 'fun'.

Together, we can make a difference
